The event is the kickoff for the summer season at the Hygienic Art Park and is the major fundraiser in support of I AM Festival which returns this year for its seventh installment on September 7th, 2013.

Voting for the 2013 "People's Choice" Whalie Awards is now OPEN! Go to www.wailingcity.com/vote, (or click the purple banner at the top of our main page), to cast your votes! These are only a portion of the MANY awards that will be presented at the 2013 Whalie Awards on Saturday May 25 at the beautiful Hygienic Art Park!

There are MANY other awards such as "Album of the Year", "Record of the Year", "Best Breakthrough Artist", ETC! These are called "Top Critics Awards" and "Critics Choice Awards". These awards will be voted on by a panel of judges in and outside of New London.  These nominations will be announced/posted on www.wailingcity.com/thewhalieawards soon! Stay tuned!

Also, new this year to the Whalies People's Choice voting... a WRITE-IN feature for the DJ category! When you get to the DJ Category of the voting page (www.wailingcity.com/vote), simply enter the name of your favorite LIVE (non radio) DJ from NEW LONDON COUNTY into the text field. Any DJ's entered that are not from New London county will not be counted. Radio DJ's will also not be counted. Once you have made all your voting selections, enter a valid email at the bottom and click "submit votes" as normal. After 2 weeks (May 10) the write in option will be removed and the top picks will become nominees. Those top picks will then be posted under the DJ category to be voted on until the end of Whalie voting (May 25). Please note write in enteries will count as a vote.

Chris MacKay & the ToneShifters

Formed in 2009, the ToneShifters energetic live show melds their individual musical tastes into a danceable freestyle fusion of blues, rock, swing, rockabilly and honky tonk, otherwise known as “Swinginrockabluesabilly.”  They released the single “Lena” on the Good Sponge label “Good Sponge Volume 1” compilation in March 2012 followed by a full length debut “Picture on the ‘Fridge” in April 2012, which will be re-released in a new format this spring. Most recently their single “Go Speed” was released on the Good Sponge label “Volume II” compilation, which is now available for download and will be available as a hard copy shortly.

The 2013 New London St. Patrick's Day Parade will take place Sunday, March 17th in downtown New London, Connecticut at 1:00pm. The parade will set up on Water Street and start on Bank Street (near Tilley St). Live music lovers! One new twist at this year's St Patrick's Day Parade will be a very special live band performance on a float! This year, The Swaggerin' Growlers, the popular Boston-based riot folk band that finds it's niche between Flogging Molly, Mischief Brew and The Pogues! The ever talented Bobby Crash (Burnouts From Outer Space / Royale Brothers) has released a children's Easter song titled "It's Easter Time (You Got Your Ears on?)". The song is Crash's version of Peter Cottontail... with Pete behind the wheel of a big rig truck driving around the USA delivering Easter baskets and all sorts of goodies to all the kids who talk to Pete on his CB radio. Crash composed this for his neice, nephew and Godchildren a few years ago and decided to release the song.

Providing the soundtrack to the annual Hygienic Art show, The Rock Fix is a showcase of some of the area's most exciting developing acts in the musical community. Presented in association with New London independent label The Telegraph Recording Company, the concert in the historic Crocker House Ballroom is a must-see for music lovers.

This year's acts include:

Selections for this year's Rock Lobster Band-O-Matic will be announced at the Rock Fix at approximately 10pm. Beer and wine and other refreshments will be available for purchase. The event is all-ages (ID must be presented to purchase alcoholic libations). There will be a merch table featuring releases from participating acts and others in the community.

New London's doom bass and drums duo Bedroom Rehab Corporation, will be releasing their debut LP Red Over Red with a "first listen" party at The Telegraph on Thursday January 17. This event will serve as the band's release party, along with 2 live shows locally: Fri Jan 18 @ The El-N-Gee and Sat Jan 26 @ The Crocker House Ballroom for The Hygienic Rock Fix.  

Red Over Red CD's will be available for purchase at the first listen party, (which is before the actual street date on Jan 22), for all who attend. The band decided on the listening party as a way to give locals "first dibs" on purchasing the record before it's street date, as well as a chance to mingle with friends and listen to the record without the volumes of a live band release party.

The album was recorded and mixed in October by Justin Pizzoferrato, (Dinosaur Jr, Sonic Youth, Black Pyramid), at his new studio Sonelab, (Chelsea Light Moving, Black Francis), in Easthampton, MA. The LP was mastered by Carl Saff of Saff Mastering in Chicago, IL and will be released with help from local independent record label Telegraph Recording Company. The first single, "Gone by the Boards" was released in December, and is streaming or available for purchase and download here.

2012. This year the world didn't end... but we did lose some amazing bands to hiatuses and hibernations and sadly, we lost some very talented and loved local music legends.

But through good times and bad, sad times and happy ones, our little scene has continued to evolve and create and impress and no matter what, we’ve always kept the music playing.

Recently we asked a few local musicians and music lovers to name their favorite artist, song and shows of 2012. We also included their hopes for 2013.

Band: How do you not love Full Moon Jamboree? The combo of those 4 guys is amazing and it's nice to see the acclaimed Joey Royale back up on stage where he makes it all look effortless and cool, a true showman.
Song: For me it was “US 50” by John Fries. That song was meant for sunny day car rides down cruisin’ down the highway.
Show: Though we’ve lost many bands this year, Gone for Good was the first local band to break my heart. I’ll always remember the energy of their last show and I’m glad I took a copy of their set list off the stage for my collection!

Best New Bands of 2012/Bands to watch: With all the bands we lost this year, a few new bands did pop up!! Street People, who erupted at some point in 2011, but really made thier mark this year if you ask me; Slander, a new super group from Mystic; Horns of Ormus which formed out of the ashes of Missing Cat; and punk rockers Modern Primates.  I'm definitely looking forward to seeing and hearing from these new bands in the coming year!
Song:  For me, it had to be "Nothing Cool" by The Reducers - it was the song we, (Paul Brockett Roadshow) covered for The Reducers Tribute album this year. We also got the chance to play the song at the tribute show... WITH PETER! So honored! It meant so much to us to be a part of it!!
Show: Hands down had to be The Reducers Tribute show at the O'Neil in September. We lost Reducers bassist Steve Kaika to a courageous battle with cancer in June... it was a heavy loss for our scene, our community and Reducers fans worldwide. This tribute show was a wonderful way to celebrate Steve's life and the music of the Reducers.
2013: Hoping to see more people out at the shows in the new year... SUPPORT LOCAL MUSIC... spread the word about shows, and occupy a venue! I'd also really love to see some sort of Reducers tribute (or something like this) happen annually. I'm also really looking forward to the release of our, (Bedroom Rehab Corporation)'s debut record Red Over Red to come out in January!

Band: The Suicide Dolls. They are the hardest working and doing adventurous things sonically within more standard rock structures. They've been a huge inspiration on BRC and are just generally cool people.
Best new band of 2012: Horns of Ormus.  It’s been a revolving door of names and 1 member change since they were Monster Factory but I think they’ve found a sound that really shows their strengths and I’m excited to see what they come up with.
Show: I think the best moment for the New London music scene this year was the The Reducers Tribute show at the O'Neil.  It was such a great show of love and respect for a band that has paved the way for all of us.  On top of that I got to share the stage with Paul Brockett Roadshow and Peter Detmold of The Reducers to sing a “Bastards of Young”, that’s something I’ll remember forever.
2013: I’m looking forward to a few things in 2013 (in no particular order).  I’m looking forward to seeing more bands play outside of New London and CT and then bring the bands they meet back here.  I’m looking forward to the evolution of Daphne Lee Martin as a solo artist, she’s got some super interesting twists in style coming out and it should be cool to watch.  I’m looking forward to the release of Red Over Red, Bedroom Rehab Corporation's debut LP, we couldn’t be more proud of the way it came out and I’m excited to see how people react.

Purveyors of rock Recur Occurrence, (Jason Banta: guitar, Corina Malbaurn: bass and Ben LaRose: drums), are calling it quits. Other opportunities have been presenting themselves to all members and it seems as though time constraints and divergent paths have caught up with them. Since 2007 RO has been playing big, high energy, rock music unheard in New London since the late 90's. More than nostalgia, they were a sign that the style never died it just was just vacationing (probably in the mid west). Aggressive but still holding great pop melodies, RO was a shining example of making music that was artistic yet still applied to a large audience. Playing bills alongside Life and Times, Riddle of Steel, and Traindodge, they showed that they could keep up with some heavy hitters within the genre. Come out and give these guys a sendoff to remember because they deserve it for sure.

The show Saturday is actually a cassette release party for NL rockers Wrist Like This. Also on the bill are Power Blessings from Northampton, MA. Sure to be one heck of a rock show. Don't miss it!

The show will take place at the first venue the Reducers played together as a band, the Rose Barn at the Eugene O'Neill Theater in Waterford, CT. Live performances from Reducers peers and friends Heap,  the Dogmatics, the Manchurians, Paul Brockett Roadshow, the Rivergods (featuring Dave Rave and Lauren Agnelli), the Clothespins, Matt Gouette, Blonde Furniture, Jes Farnsworth (of the Backstabbers), Missy Roback and other special guests and will focus on Reducer's (and Reducers-related) music. Bring your dance shoes!

Doors open at 7pm. There is a suggested donation of $10, and the new CD will be available for purchase. All profits from the event and CD sales will benefit the family of Steve Kaika, the Reducers' bassman who died earlier this year after a courageous battle with cancer. Beer and wine will be available for purchase, and as always at the O'Neill, there will be free pretzels.

I Am Festival is back!

This year, we have moved the event into the heart of downtown New London. The two main stages will be located at Parade Plaza and the Hygienic Art Park.

I AM Festival returns to downtown New London this September 8 from Noon to 11pm.  This will be the sixth iteration of the free outdoor event (the organizers took last year off to regroup and reconfigure the festival) and big changes are in store.  Previously hosted on the Custom House Pier on the Waterfront Park, the 2012 festival will have two stages in the heart of the city center, the CT.com Stage at Parade Plaza (with its infamous Whale Tail) and the beautiful outdoor stage at the Hygienic Art Park. There will also two smaller showcase stages at the Oasis Pub (16 Bank Street) and The Telegraph (19 Golden Street). There will be an indie marketplace centered around the Parade Plaza featuring crafters, artisans, independent retailers, non-profits and food vendors.

I AM Festival has had a knack for booking artists on the verge of breaking big - from Matt & Kim and Girl Talk to Jay Reatard, Deerhoof, and The Drums - festival goers have an opportunity to see the future of music now at a free event.  This year is no exception with a stellar cast of up-and-comers including Merge Records' Hospitality, Dom, Math the Band, Bear Hands, Sean Bones among many others.  The organizers also make certain to point to some of our most successful and talented regional performers and for this year's line-up, we've proudly slected New England Music Awards Best New Artists The Suicide Dolls, the ever popular and party-waiting-to-happen crew in The Hempsteadys, as well as newcomers like New Haven's Sidewalk Dave (who will be celebrating the release of their new CD 'Hard On Romance'), Hartford's The Sea the Sea (featuring CT State Troubadour Chuck E. Costa) and Mystic's The GraveRobbers (fresh off their appearance at the legendary Newport Folk Fest).

Stoner Hands of Doom is one of the premier annual gatherings for underground heavy/stoner/doom music in North America. SHoD has been held annually since 1999 in various small venues throughout the USA. Many acts are unsigned/unreleased and many travel thousands of miles to gather in the name of rock. The concept was dreamed up by promoters Rob and Cheryl Levey, who have planned, booked and organized it since its inception. Under their guidance, the festival affectionately known as SHoD has grown over ten years from a one-day event to a weekend-long gathering, featuring over three dozen bands. SHoD X was supposed to be the 10th and last, but in Rob's words:

"Cheryl and I just can't seem to let it go we love the music and the scene andjust want to do our part as best we can. Honestly went to a Valkyrie show in Harrisonburg VA Bible of the Devil was playing with them as well and but it was on a Wednesday and the show was very well attendedand the energy and entheusiasm just overwhelmed plus both those bands jammed and it just motivated me".

Fresh off their first show at the Oasis in New London, and a week after their first EP World as Museum has been released, the new indie rock quintet Slander is already listed up for New England Artist of the Month in a poll at The Deli Magazine - help out the band and give them a vote!

Slander, the Mystic supergroup, consists of Grayson Connelly on guitar, Luke Hunter on guitar and vocals, Julia Farrar on vocals, Chris Wimpfheimer on bass, and Rich Freitas on drums.

Catfish Phillips are releasing a new CD titled Still Plays For Beer and are celebrating with a release party at High Noon Saloon in Norwich this Saturday August 18 with Llama Tsunami and other special guests.

The record was recorded at Soundloft Studio in Branford, CT with Michael Piffington. The band has put one of the songs from the new record titled "Biscuits and Gravy" on their bandcamp page for free download! The line up includes heavy hitters such as The Jukebox Romantics, Far From Finished, and The Independents, who are joined by other national/regional favorites American Pinup, Lost In Society and Connecticut legends Two Fisted Law. Local bands on the bill at the EL–N-GEE Club are Cry Havoc and Pickpocket as well as Albany New Yorks New Red Scare and Measured In Grey.

Upstart Fest will be kicking off at The Knitting Factory in Brooklyn NY on Thursday August 9th, then coming to The El –N- Gee Club in New London on Friday August 10th, followed by the Chance Theater in Poughkeepsie NY on Saturday August 11th and wrapping things up at Asbury Lanes in Asbury Park NJ on Sunday August 12th.

Doors are at 5 pm and tickets are $10 advance and $12 at the door.

The band says that they had so much material that, though they just released their last record Lightning Behind The Grace only a year ago, they were ready to release another full length record. The new record will be released at the bands 'last show' on June 29 at The Oasis Pub.

Steve from The Reducers still has a very tough road ahead of him but he is deeply grateful for everyone’s generosity and support. The biggest day of the year for vinyl lovers is back! We'll have hundreds of limited edition, one-time only pressings from a huge array of artists including Flaming Lips, Animal Collective, Amanda Palmer, Arcade Fire, Iggy & the Stooges, David Bowie, Luna, Mastadon, Feist, Phish, Preteen Zenith, Uncle Tupelo, The Civil Wars, and so many more. THE PACK A.D. - Following in the tradition of the Black Keys and the White Stripes, the Pack A.D. play a blend of rock and electric blues. The female duo is comprised of drummer Maya Miller and vocalist/guitarist Becky Black, both of whom left their previous Pixies-styled band to focus on bluesier music. After emerging in 2006 as one of Vancouver's more buzzworthy bands, the Pack A.D. signed with Mint Records in 2007 and released a debut album, Tintype, the following January. Funeral Mixtape, the duo's second offering, was issued eight months later. The group toured heavily in support of both releases and eventually returned to Vancouver, where the bandmembers holed themselves up at Hive Studios and began tinkering with new sounds. Although still a blues band at heart, the Pack A.D. found themselves drawn to punk and garage rock, both of which steered the sound of 2010's We Kill Computers in a slightly different direction.


BEDROOM REHAB CORPORATION - BRC is a 2 piece band hailing from New London, CT; (Adam Wujtewicz: bass, vocals; Meghan Killimade: drums), and are centered around hypnotic doom and gloom rifting and slugdy shoe-gaze soundscapes. Gathering influence from grunge, metal, stoner rock and blues, the band are writing songs that are more than just the sum of these influences. They have released one EP "Alter Your Spin" and 2 singles "Don't Expect Too Much" and "5 Nights In Jail" (which is a doom and gloom slide-bass blues version of the old Mississippi John Hurt classic), and are currently at work on their debut LP "Red Over Red", a paranormal seafaring concept record scheduled for release in 2012.


BLACK CAT  - BLACK CAT is the latest in a series of serious stripped down rock 'n' roll projects emanating from hillcountry Wisconsin, the forests of Vermont and out of the rocks of Lummi Island. Collaborators: Phil "Lucky Duck" & Adam "Greasy" Cook. Greasy came from Vermont with a puppet on his drum hand. Phil lived in Wisconsin with a black cricket on an old farm. They started playing pig roasts. Everybody liked to get down to the the panthers guitar and gorilla drum. It was undeniable. One time somebody pooped in his hand and threw it. They started walking with staffs and healing along the riverside. They are of stick. Now they hold court with Walrus Tusk and are still of mud. When it crossed their path, they we reincarnated as BLACK CAT a velvet prize taking over other their past incarnations as the DIRT BROTHERS & THE WILD ANIMALS.

The Sinner's Circle returns Saturday, March 3rd with a very special "Up and Comers" edition featuring four amazing songwriters who are still in High School, and already making an impact locally: Ian Meadows (Meadows Brothers), Molly Bowers, Ian Maxwell (Silver Hammer) and Trevor Giles!

Brown Bird is better listened to in a room made of wood. Of course, it is easy to download the code and listen to the band on small computer speakers, but what is the point? You miss the warm layers of guitar, banjo, violin, double bass, cello, and bass drum (wooden rim) which hangs thick over their latest full-length effort, "Salt for Salt".

Recorded live to tape in Pawtucket, RI, "Salt For Salt" is the first album by Brown Bird to capture the intense energy of the duo's live show, surging in waves that often swell into high-spirited, foot-stomping madness. David Lamb's lyrics are as well-written as they are emotionally intelligent, thankfully avoiding the pitfalls of the wish-wash known as "modern-folk" or "singer-songwriting". Lamb and his partner MorganEve Swain write simply, and the record is eerily sparse at times - a tambourine, a bass drum and the cello often the sole accompaniement to Lamb's (what a name) cracked, wood-smoke voice.
 
Brown Bird are also not afraid to write experimentally - "Ebb and Flow" and "Shiloh" (the latter a longer, entirely instrumental track) each boast melodies worthy of a dervish, the melodic structure reminiscent more of Turkish or Greek rebetika than old-time or bluegrass. Lamb and Swain work beautifully together, with his banjo providing a backbone to a fiddle break, her harmonies a lonesome echo of the melody. But Brown Bird also know too much to be pure romantics; Lamb's continual reference to ships clearly come from his years spent working at the shipyard in Warren, RI, just as their arrangements well only from a deep knowledge of the American folk tradition.

Paring down from five musicians on their last album to the duo of Lamb and Swain on "Salt For Salt" resulted in some necessary instrument changes - Swain, a lifelong violinist, spends most of the album on cello and double bass, instruments she picked up in the past two years. Lamb has a kick drum and woodblock/tambourine rigged to a second pedal in front of him, using his whole body and voice to carry the rhythm and melody simultaneously. This new configuration propels each song forward with a blur of hands, feet and voices.

A cantankerous and drafty two-man ship stationed in Providence, RI, Brown Bird plays original, traditional American music in the best sense possible. It is music that comes from a context but is not afraid of the context: a living root with a view towards the leaves.

Daphne Lee Martin & Raise the Rent is wrung from the rags of New London’s speakeasies, Daphne Lee Martin & Raise the Rent stir together a wicked musical cocktail, drawing from the deep well of the American songbook. Fusing honky-tonk torch vocals with swing and gypsy fiddling, swirling jazz-pop, and ragtime harmony singing, they bring together the gems of their own original songs with a top-shelf selection of beloved American broadsides of a bygone age. Whether you’re in the mood for an easy evening of sweet melodies or a night of swinging tunes, Raise the Rent is a band you must pull over to hear!

THE SUICIDE DOLLS
Hot off the heels of releasing their first proper album Prayers In Parking Lots (recorded at Pixies mainstay, Q Division Studios), the Suicide Dolls have been playing dates in Boston and New York to promote the album. They perform at the Oasis for their hometown crowd, many of whom agreed that "Prayers" could well be the album of the year on WailingCity.com's Year In Review!

New Haven's Field Recordings have been compared to so many bands, it's ridiculous! We've heard Blur, Braid, The Dismemberment Plan... all comparisons many bands would kill for! An energetic indie rock group that's been topping year-end album lists themselves!

INSTANT FAMILY
The Oasis debut of Instant Family should prove to be exciting! The Mystic, CT group have only been around for a short period of time, but have played some notable shows including the Hygienic Artists "Migration Fin" show. A psychedelic indie rock band such as this will make a nice fit with the Field Recordings and Suicide Dolls!

“All three of us write and all three of us sing,” says Jeff Gitelman, who resigned from touring as Alicia Keys' guitarist to concentrate full-time on recording the Stepkids self-titled debut album. Drummer Tim Walsh continues, “There's an equal split in the creative process. Any lyric, any melody, any idea could have been done by any of us.”

This approach comes from more than a decade of musical experimentation and experience. Raised on the East Coast jazz and R&B circuit, individual band members went on to share stages with 50 Cent and Lauryn Hill, tour internationally with indie punk band Zox, score movies and commercials and produce solo albums.

It’s psychedelia for the 21st century, where the focus is on the whole.

Band: Definitely the year of Steve Elci. He was just everywhere, he signed an international publishing deal, and will have a new CD coming up in 2012. He's just an incredible songwriter and I've heard the new songs. He's about to blow children's music out of the water!
Song: Speaking of water, my fav song of 2011 was the Franklin Brothers' "I've Been to the Waters" off their Lifeboat to Nowhere CD. It's got a Jackson Browne feel, and I just love the musicianship on it, the message, and how it sounds new, old, and familiar at the same time.

Band: I gotta go with the Year of The Suicide Dolls. Between the (still ongoing) release of the long awaited Prayers In Parking Lots and their fabulous live shows, they're a lock.
Song: Song of the year? Pish posh! Album of the Year: for me, it's a tie between Erik Lamb's wonderful Blow Up Dolls and the Suicide Doll's Prayers In Parking Lot.

Band: The Weird Beards. No show was the same and they are creatively epic. They always bring it, you have to be there to experience them you can't explain it but it's a creative revolution. They always put on a show. I think they will be artiest of the year, next year and I really hope they go far. Skidmore has created a Beard cultural with lobsters, ukes; stand up base, amazing lyrics and pure fun that they have playing with one another. And that's an Aaarrreeeeyaka!!!
Song: Burnouts from Outer Space "Ms Brown". Pure Rock heaven. I wish they would play this more. Pete Barrera kills the solos every time they play this one. Pete might be one of the most underrated guitar players of this region when he wants to bring it he kills it. All of the burnouts are amazing no duds in that band. Jason on guitar blowing it away having a blast. Dave on base sounds killer on Ms Brown. Scott keeps it all steady as Bobby tells the story Ms brown. "Then you love me, then you hate me"

Band: Sexual Healing was probably my act of 2011. Working with them was a hoot!
Song: "Bee Keeper" by the Paul Brockett Roadshow was the one song on the comp this year that really got me, so charming I can't even stand it! Although, if I had to choose a 2nd unreleased song, it would be Matt Gouette covering Sandy Allen's "If You Ever Need Me".

DJ: I have seen many awesome shows this year, but 2011 was definitely the year of crazy dance parties. And the djs that raised the bar with their laser light infused madness and booty shaking beats are none other than Bad Manners. Those guys fill a room every time and the peeps dance until their clothes come off. Gotta say that's pretty fantastic!
Song: As for song of the year for me I can not stop singing Friends songs. "I'm his girl" replays over and over in my head and I love it. I could hear that song everyday and it wouldn't get old. It's fantastic! I know it's not local but Sam is so I'm sticking with it!

Band: Natural Fathers' performance at Bank Street Cafe March 6th, 2011. It was my first time seeing them live and at the time they were still a 2 piece- I was so impressed by their raw energy.
Song: "I Was Born On A Mountain" by Natural Fathers - as a result of seeing said live show- I ended up annoying friends and family for months playing this song on repeat... as loud as possible. Best to listen to in car or shower- loudly.

Best New Band of 2011: I also recently saw Wrist Like This for the first time, and i would absolutely say they are my favorite local band to emerge from 2011. I can't wait to play more shows with them! Also, Burnouts from Outer Space were an awesome addition to the nL music scene this year. I'm looking forward to their album in 2012!

Band: Barefoot Truth. This band is great. Their songs are catchy and their lyrics are made of substance. I appreciate what this talented band from Mystic is out there doing and creating and they have me dancing in the clouds.
Song: "Saratoga Rain" by Daphne Lee Martin and Raise the Rent. Much like most of Daphne's music, this song is smokey, smooth and effortlessly sexy. A haunting melody with the power to take me away to another place and time, maybe a dream or a memory... either way, it's real nice there.

A new event - brought to you by the team behind Urban Art Show - will focus on DJ culture. You will have the chance to witness the DJ aspect of our music scene as we welcome you to 33-1/3 DJ Expo & Jam.

The show will include the best local and regional DJ talent across many genres and will close the night with a first rate headliner: PRINCE PAUL!!

Prince Paul is the founding member of Gravediggaz, Stetsasonic and Handsome Boy Modeling School, and producer of such classics as De La Soul's "3 Feet High And Rising" and even Chris Rock's "Bigger And Blacker!". For those of you not familiar, Prince Paul is an icon in the hip hop world... and beyond. His resume is insane! He's worked with everyone from Chuck D to David Byrne to Sean Lennon to Linkin Park to John Oates to The RZA and so on!

The show will be capped off with a fireworks display during the headlining set. Special guest artists from New York City - Destroy & Rebuild and Denny Rivera - will be performing live art. There will also be vendors selling food and merchandise.

The 2010 Whalie Award winners Amido Black, one of New London's best loved metal bands, is calling it a career this Saturday.  Family, work, life and the scheduling conflicts that come along with these things are forcing the band to call it quits.  Their unique brand of guitar driven melodic death metal and hardcore will be sorely missed by the area's metal heads.  Do not despair though... we've been assured through their Facebook page, which this comment was found:

"Yes, sometimes life gets in the way. New and equally disturbing projects will be born out of the ashes". 

I for one look forward to the boys branching out, exploring new avenues and growing their musical legacies.  Amido Black will be joined by their melodic metal partners in crime Fall From Below and New London area punk stalwarts Sadplant.

The Reducers return for their annual Summer stop at the Hygienic Art Park and are proudly joined by their friends 17 Relics. It's going to be a rock and roll party- so be prepared to get your dance on! 17 Relics have just recently returned to action with a triumphant gig at the El n Gee Club as part of the Four Roosevelt: Depot Memorial Show and are preparing material for a new album this autumn. It's the first time the two acts have played a stage together in more than a decade. You won't want to miss it!!

New London Music Festival presents its 5th annual installation of TRADITIONS: A Celebration of American Folk Music. The day long festival has become a true snapshot of the full American Music Experience right here in downtown New London. Traditions began out of a deep respect for the multi-national storytelling and wisdom of the traditional music that immigrated here while warmly embracing the evolution of those musical forms as they build and define our own unique culture. This year Traditions focuses on acts that use their original songwriting to show that evolution in our American folk canon.

The last four years' models featured international and national performers The Wiyos, David Wax Museum, Tim Eriksen & Cordelia’s Dad, Robbie O'Connell, Roberts and Barrand, and Serre l'Ecoute, mainstays of the American Bluegrass, Sacred Harp, Gospel, Folk-Rock, Delta Blues, and Zydeco movements as well as truly talented multi-instrumentalists and storytellers.

Soulshot is New England’s premier reggae, ska, and rocksteady band. Formed in 2003, Soulshot is known/Users/davidturano/Desktop/SOULSHOT.doc for its many gigs in the U.S. and Jamaica with legendary singer/songwrier/guitarist Ernie Smith, as well as work with Dalton "Screwdriver" Lindo at the Ocean State Reggae Festival, the Cape Cod 2007 Winter Bash, and with the sweet voice of Rastaman Roger Robin from the UK. Soulshot also backed the late, great King of Rocksteady, Alton Ellis, at the Rhode Island Reggae Festival in 2004. Silver Hammer is an exciting young band hailing from Gales Ferry, CT. that’s been featured as the House Band on Scott Haney’s “Better Connecticut” show on CBS, heard on WCNI and WBLQ, and been seen live all over the state.  From parties to parades, festivals to fairs and at venues such as The Garde Arts Center, Hanafin’s Pub and Toad’s Place, they always put on a great show!  They play electric and acoustic sets that include the best of classic rock and contemporary music, from folk to hard rock. Their harmonies and original compositions will knock you out!  Who’s in the band?  Siblings Braiden and Sierra will amaze you with their vocal versatility.  Brothers Ian, Duncan and Aidan cover vocals, keys, guitar, bass and percussion.  Lastly, there’s twelve-year old guitar phenomenon Tom, whose talent been described in the Norwich Bulletin as “verging on genius.” Go check them out for a rockin’ good time!

Wrung from the rags of New London’s speakeasies, Dame Calico & Raise the Rent stir together a wicked musical cocktail, drawing from the deep well of the American songbook. Fusing honky-tonk torch vocals with swing and gypsy fiddling, swirling jazz-pop, and zydeco and ragtime harmony singing, they bring together the gems of their own original songs with a top-shelf selection of beloved American broadsides of a bygone age. Whether you’re in the mood for an easy evening of sweet melodies or a night of swinging tunes, Raise the Rent is a band you must pull over to hear!

The music of Black Marmot is a blend of acoustic folk and rock. With the occasional touch of blues and country, the songs are an appealing mixture of melodic stylings. Upbeat and light-hearted compilations are contrasted starkly with dark fictitious stories. Each song is so unique, drawing from a multitude of musical and lyrical backgrounds, that there is never any repetition; only the constant reinvention of the band.

Truth be told, no musical genre really defines the Rivergods. From folk harmony to dirge country to swamp blues to jangly pop, the Rivergods draw influence far and wide from a vast musical landscape.

Columbia Fields from Hebron, CT are an “Indie Rock Ass-Kicking Machine!” said the Hartford Advocate. Having played for thousands of fans in the northeast it is no doubt this band is headed for a long career of rock hits in the music industry. Their unique, powerfully emotional rock has garnered thousands of fans, consistent booking, and increased radio play.

In a recent interview on Channel 10, Cory was featured as an up and coming blues guitar player and has already had the opportunity to sit in with the likes of blues players such as James Montgomery, Dave Howard, Stovall Brown, Black & White, Tommy Ferraro, Gary Gramolini, and The Senders.

THE FOLKADELICS’ from Brooklyn, NY are an inimitable amalgamation of a little bit of reggae, funky three-part harmony vocals, with a touch of hip hop.

Two sets! Before and after the fireworks! Veteran New London rockers (and longtime Sailfest favorites) return to usher in the 2010 fireworks display. If any rock and roll band band can challenge the fireworks for excitement and volume, it's The Reducers. Formed in 1978, The Reducers built a following throughout the East Coast and exploded nationally in 1984 thanks to their #1 independent LP, "Let's Go." They've been highlighted in countless newspapers articles and television profiles, and were even the subject of a feature length documentary film. In 2004 The Reducers went international, and triumphantly toured Japan. The Reducers are quite possibly thought of as the fathers of New London local music. Having all come from various backgrounds of music, Paul Brockett, Dave Anderson & Meghan Killimade have created a genre that is truly all their own. Often described as "country inspired rock n roll with punk beats", The Paul Brockett Roadshow Band combines country music story telling, honky tonk fueled foot stompin and good old rock n roll rhythm thatll guarantee a thumb-loopin good time!

Bike New London will host a bicycle valet from 12noon-9pm on Saturday July 9th, 2011 along the 'whale wall' on the corner of Eugene O'Neill and State Street. For a dollar a wheel, riders may leave their bicycles under the supervision of Bike New London volunteers for the day. All proceeds go towards bicycle racks in the downtown area. For any of you that were a part of the Mystic music scene in the mid to late 90's...

Dayne Duranti, front man for 90's Mystic based bands Doug and Small Town Hero (etc),  is heading a weekend long memorial show which will be in memory of Tom "Bush" Falvey, Kevin "Godo" Leonard and Harrison Sherman. Dayne, who was motivated to start the memorial show after learning of Falvey's sudden passing just a few weeks ago, originally started a facebook event page and asked old friends to come together and share memories of the old Mystic days, and "Depot House" where many hung out and shared residency.  The response was astounding.

"Four Roosevelt: The Depot Memorial Show" will be held over the course of 3 days which will kick off on Thursday July 14th at The Oasis. Thursday's Oasis show will feature solo acts such as Dayne Duranti, Matt Gouette, Roger Human Being, Kirk Watrous & Rob Harbeck.  July 15 & 16 will be held at The El-N-Gee Club and will feature over a half dozen reunited Mystic based bands, and some newer bands active in our scene now that include members who were a part of the 90's Mystic scene. Most will be playing for the first time since the 90's: 17 Relics, Doug, Golgo, All Fall Down, The Afflicted, 3$ Depth Charge, Anderson Family Picnic, Mouth Full Of Dimes and more! See line up below!

 In addition, local music scene photographers Michelle Gemma and Meghan Killimade have joined forces with Rich Martin from Telegraph Recording Company/Hozomeen Press to showcase their photographs of Mystic bands and places of the 90's as well as flyers and testimonials in a paper zine which will be available for purchase on the 15th and 16th; all money raised from this will be donated to the cause.

Well here it is, WailingCity.com version 2.0! As you can tell we've changed a lot since the last version. We put a lot of time and effort into this new site, and we hope you will all love it, use it and contribute to it!

Lots of new features:

- "New London On The Road" which is section where we can post out of town gigs for New London bands!

- "Weekly Events" new section where reoccurring weekly events like happy hour's etc can be posted!

- We split the old article section up into two: "CD Reviews" which is Adam's section for reviews of the newest local discs; and "On The Scene" which will feature pictures, videos and recaps of shows and events in town.

- "Music Videos" a special section for those video crazed bands...  many New London bands have really been getting into creating videos these days!

- "NL Festivals/Annual Events" which feature links to just that... I AM Fest, Traditions, Sailfest etc.

- "NL Links" which include links to notable New London shops, businesses, organizations and community sites.

- "Regional & Local Blogs"  which include links to local music related blogs, info sites and labels in the tri state area. All good information we were never able to get on the site properly before!!

Also, you may have noticed that we've made room for all these fancy new music-based features by saying goodbye to the things that we could never really expand on or really make proper time to cover: Galleries, artists, writers, theater etc. We are sad that we can't include them on the site anymore, but we really wanted to get back to our roots and concentrate on the music - at least for now. In addition to not having the amount of manpower we really need to continue these sections, we felt that the websites like New London Mainstreet, The New London Patch and The Day (ETC!) already do a fine job reporting on the art, galleries and theater etc in our scene then we could ever begin to do.

There will be a few more features that will appear on the site within the next week.... including searching events by date, a continuous changing background and more! Keep checking back for more features and updates!!

There were 22+ people displaced from their homes on Bank Street in New London late on Saturday Feb. 5th, when the roof of their building collapsed from the weight of too much snow and I must add, poor landlord maintenance. I couldn't let this slide. These are my neighbors. Many of my musician friends and colleagues couldn't allow this to go unnoticed either, so; This Sunday, February 20th: The State Street Mini Festival / Benefit for the Displaced Bank Street Residents.

About Hygienic Weekend:

On Saturday, January 29, the gallery walls will once again be open to all for the annual Salon des Independents exhibition. As for the last 32 years, the rules remain the same: one piece per artist, no judge, no jury, no fees, no censorship and all our welcome! The hanging officially begins at 8am and runs through 6pm with the show officially opening at 8pm. It's first come, first served so get there early.

Early in the day the Young Artists show will kick off at the Garde Gallery and just next door The Garde will be hosting what we hope will become an annual tradition with their inaugural "Take The Stage" event where performers of all stripes will have an opportunity to grace the historic main stage. In the evening, some of the best and brightest from the regional music community will be taking the stage themselves at the Crocker House Ballroom for The Rock Fix and just down the road the Oasis Pub will host "The Cabaret" where you'll find all manor of performance art - edgy, wild and raw. This year's Hygienic indie film fest "The Screening Room" will be hosted at the venerable El n Gee Club.

That's just scratching the surface of what we have to offer! We'd be remiss if we didn't mention The Hootenanny, Fashion in the Ballroom, Mayfly Playhouse 24, Hygienic Poets and, well, let's just say there's a lot of everything for everyone during the two week run!

The show is all ages and open to all. Beer and wine available for purchase, a valid ID must be presented. There will also be an indie marketplace hosted by The Telegraph featuring local releases from New London area bands and artists including the new scene compilation The Long Hundred and the fourth series of "CosmoSingles" from the New London based label Cosmodemonic Telegraph.

Close to 40 New London county bands & artists have turned in songs for the 4th annual "Cosmo Singles" - which will feature 2 songs by each band.  This is the largest amount of singles released yet!

For 2011, Cosmo lead man Rich Martin, mixed it up a bit and asked New London bands to cover another New London band for the b-side (or song 2) for their Cosmo single. Just about all bands submitting songs this year jumped on the opportunity to cover their friends and fellow rockers. Some bands went way back, digging up some of New London's rock and roll history. Other bands chose to stay closer to present day covering bands you can see rocking out at The Oasis on any given weekend. Either way you can bet that everyone will be lined up waiting to buy these singles just to see what bands have been covered and to hear these new renditions! The Cosmo Singles will be sold individually or all together in one specially priced pack and will be released Saturday January 29th at The Hygienic Rock Fix - a local showcase of New London acts that is in conjunction with the annual Hygienic Art Show, celebrating it's 32nd year for 2011!

Also being released January 29 by Cosmodemonic is a double disc, 40 track compilation featuring the of the Cosmo Single A-sides "The Long Hundred". You'll hear some new bands and some hometown favs. Some bands that you can expect to buy singles from and that are featured on the compilation are John Fries & The Heat,  Estrogen & Tonic, Anne Castellano, Sodium Lights, Fatal Film, The Reducers, Recur Occurrence, Daphne Lee Martin & Raise The Rent, The Rivergods, Gone For Good, Low-Beam, Paul Brockett Roadshow, Flesh Hammer, Red Hot Stove Tops, and Matt Gouette just to name a few... and that is ONLY a few. There are 40 tracks and singles! 40!!!!!!!

We know that many of you already love Gone For Good, but "who the heck is In-Flight Safety?" you may wonder. Here's a few quick points to tell you why you need to know this band immediately:

1. They're a sick indie rock band from Canada. Anyone with any musical taste whatsoever can figure out why that's a good thing.

2. The band recorded an EP in their basement and went full time after receiving a letter of praise from DAVID FUCKING BOWIE!

3. You've probably heard them and not even known it... Their music has recently been featured in the following:
"Chuck" on NBC
"Vampire Diaries" on CW
"Dear John" movie trailer
and my personal favorite, "Degrassi: The Next Generation!"

4. They're a hot artist on well-known blog The Line Of Best Fit.

5. They have spent the last year performing alongside some of Canada’s best independent artists. In-Flight Safety has toured with Stars, and appeared alongside Broken Social Scene, Metric, The Constantines, Hawksley Workman and many others.

Kevin and Josh (best known for their previous band, Brava Spectre) made a splash this year with this heavy blues rock project. Their debut EP is now available and would fit well on an iTunes playlist next to DeStijl-era White Stripes and early Bla...ck Keys - with just a tad more screaming, of course. The full-length will be released before you know it!

2010 was a good year for these guys. The debut EP by this garage rock powerhouse won the prestigious Whalie Award for Record of the Year and they were lauded by blogs and magazines including The Big Takeover and CT Indie. 2011 looks even more promising - their debut full-length (due out in the spring) was produced by Jeremy from Pretty & Nice and sounds INCREDIBLE! A tour and major publicity is in the works for what could easily be one of Connecticut's best records of the promising new year.

As the ball drops welcoming 2011, The Fears (now officially a two-piece live) will perform their brand new single "Gram by Gram." The band has an extremely promising year ahead of them - their debut EP (worked on by the guys who just produced records for Vampire Weekend and Kings of Leon) will be released winter/spring 2011, tour plans and major blog hype appear almost certain for the near future.

The Briggs brothers have been hard at work making new mixtape after new mixtape, culminating with one of their best works to date, The Last Starfighter. Justin will be spinning tunes from this and other various mixtapes till 3am! (Yes, we are open til 3am!) And, stay alert, cause you may just hear some of their remixes for local artists, including Matt Gouette, The Fears, Chumzilla and others!

Some things are meant to last. And it seems that the Friday night Blue Collar Happy Hour is one of them. What would you expect, after all? It’s hosted by life-long friends Ken Atkins and Preston Frantz. These two met at 17 and have been playing music in Southeastern CT ever since, including launching the Whalie Award-nominated music series back in February of 2007 that has boasted and hosted nearly every Americana act in the region in the years since.

Now you might be thinking to yourself, “Ken Atkins? Preston Frantz? Aren’t those the kids that had that great band back in the ‘70s and ‘80s called, what was it, New Johnny Five?” Yeah, yeah. They were out there punking it up with The Reducers and the Ramones at clubs like the El N Gee and Toad’s Place. “And you say they’re playing in two of the most accomplished country bands in New England now?” Yep. And they’re damn good.

Everything evolves. Just like Ken & Preston taking wild turns from punk rock into the country side of life, the Blue Collar Happy Hour has seen its first really big change as well. It has a brand new home at Burke's Tavern, (13 Hope Street), in Niantic. It’s also been extended- now you get to hear great music from 7 until 11pm every Friday night in the cozy bar. The food is fantastic, there’s (as always) no cover, and they have a lovely hardwood floor that my boots have certainly polished once or twice. There are plenty of places to tuck in for a conversation with friends you might see, and plenty of great spots to really watch and listen as well as pool tables in the back. It gets even better: the "BCHH" is offering a more diverse cross-section of local music than ever, including a guest appearance of The Weird Beards on the 19^th of November.

By way of review, I have seen the Hoolios, Ken Atkins & the Honkey Tonk Kind, Sandy Allen, Hellbent & Heartbreakin’, and John Fries & the Heat so far, and I’m hooked! It’s an intimate setting and the bands are very accessible- and usually happy to play requests if you know their repertoire.  Each show is a little different, but the vibe is always great. It’s a welcome relief from the long work week! I’ll see you there!

"On Saturday, November 27, 2010 our dear friend and band mate Paul “Uncle Flatty” Robertson passed from this world into the next.  As band mates and friends, we offer our condolences and empathy to Paul’s family, friends, and fans. Paul was so many things to so many people.  To us, he was a partner in musical exploration, a writer, a singer, a bass player, a harmonica master, a tinkerer, a confidant, a cautious skeptic and a carefree optimist, a firemaker and a fireman, a genuine friend that could be counted on – truly counted on – to do whatever, whenever, no questions asked. There is and will forever be an empty space in the Manshed where Paul offered his insights into verses and bass lines, sang back up vocals like the fate of mankind depended on his sincerity, and preached forth his own brand of hellfire and brimstone Connecticut style neo-revivalism.  The realization that he will no longer occupy that corner quickly leads us to admit and recognize that band rehearsal is but one of many spaces that will no longer contain his spirit as it was physically manifested in this world.  Yet knowing Paul as we did, and still do, we are quite sure that the last thing he wants us to do is dwell too long in sadness on his passing when we encounter the spaces he leaves behind.  Recently he had to run off from a gig to deliver a eulogy for a longtime friend and as we offered our condolences on his way out the door, he shrugged and advised, “Hey, it happens.  We just gotta’ do right by him.  We show up, we remember the good times, and we throw him one hell of a party.”  As was so often the case, when things got confusing and answers seemed hard to find, Paul could boil it down to the true, simple and right in just a few phrases.  We plan to follow his advice and hope you will honor his memory by doing the same."

Obituary & Funeral Information:

Paul Spencer Robertson, 57, of East Haddam and formerly of Old Lyme, passed away unexpectedly Saturday (Nov. 27, 2010) at home. Born February 19, 1953 in New London, he was the son of the late Cushman and Rosalie (Spencer) Robertson. Paul was a graduate of Nathan Hale-Ray High School in East Haddam and went on to earn a degree in Landscaping Design from the Rhode Island School of Design.  He was self employed throughout his life. A “Jack of all trades”, his interests varied from photography, history, drawing, blacksmithing, stone work and carpentry.  His passions were for music as well as for the preservation of Selden Island.

He is survived by two sisters, Anita Husted of Whately, MA and Prudence Allen of Salem, CT and numerous extended family members.  He will be sadly missed by many longtime and loyal friends. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by a sister, Nancy Jewett.

A service to celebrate his life will begin at 1 PM, Saturday (Dec. 4th) with a brief memorial service at 2 PM at the Aurora-McCarthy Funeral Home, 167 Old Hartford Road, Colchester.  Burial will be private.

There will be a celebration of Paul's life following the Colchester service at the Hadlyme Public Hall, Ferry Road, Lyme from 3-7pm. Please bring a dish to share, byob and any pictures or memories you wish to share. Paul's bandmates will be playing Paul's songs and we hope to see you there.

Downtown New London’s newest hot spot was hoppin’, spinnin’ and jammin’ on Thursday night as Daphne and Rich Martin hosted the Grand Opening of The Telegraph music store.  Sean Murray spinned the tunes, local musicians performed, and LOTS of people drooled over the vinyl eye candy.  While some marveled and reminisced over old Eagles and Styx albums, some sought out rarer finds like jazz fusion and extinct punk band offerings.  Local CDs from the best of the area’s musicians were also on display.

Musical performance highlights included an acoustic rendition of the 1979 Robert John hit “Sad Eyes,” sung beautifully, while sitting on the floor, by Matt Potter.  Sean Spellman from Quiet Life and Raquel Nasser performed Quiet Life's catchy "Big Green" to an attentive crowd.  Ben Parent, John Fries, Matt Gouette, and two-thirds of the Red Hot Stove Tops also performed.

Downtown Investment/Development Coordinator Frank McLaughlin complimented the Martins on turning the space into a wonderful addition to New London, as he picked the last raffle winner of free vinyl goodies.

When asked how the opening was going, owner Daphne said, “It’s wonderful.  I have a store full of happy rock-n-rollers!”

I AM Festival favorites Miniboone (from NY), return to New London Friday night at The Oasis Pub! Hands down, Miniboone was one of many surprise highlights at this year's I AM Festival. Totally new to New London, they performed in the afternoon with quite a welcome reception. Maybe it's because their style of jittery indie rock is simply too catchy and too infectious to resist.
